I finally figured out how to post here-
I know I've done it once but completely forgot- here is my Templeton poem.

I can hear the sounds of crows outside
Waiting for a stolen meal
Furry ears and snakelike tail
emerge from nest near slopping trough
"O! What A Ratly Feast!" he cries
Hording great morsels in his home
"O! What A Ratly Feast!" we cry,
"Sweet Templeton, What a Ratly Feast!"

Subject:The Tale of Chiaroscuro*

Here is a snippet from The Tale of Despereaux by Kate Dicamillo. Not concerning Templeton, but a saucy, loveable, ill-tempered rat just the same!

**********

As our story continues, reader, we must go backward in time to the birth of a rat, a rat named Chiaroscuro and called Roscuro, a rat born into he filth and darkness of the dungeon...

Reader, do you know the definition of the word 'chiaroscuro?'...Collapse )

There are those hearts, reader, that never mend again once they are broken. Or, if they do mend, they heal themselves in a crooked and lopsided way, as if sewn together by a careless craftsmen. Such was the fate of Chiaroscuro. His heart was broken. Picking up the spoon and placing it on his head, speaking of revenge, these things helped him put his heart back together again. But it was, alas, put together wrong.

"Where is the rat?" shouted the king. "Find the rat!"

"If you want me," muttered Roscuro as he left the banquet hall, "I will be in the dungeon, in the darkness."

Ah, yes, what you've all been waiting for... The lyrics to Templeton's song!

A Veritable Smorgasbord

A fair is a veritable smorgasbord orgasbord orgasbord
After the crowds have ceased
Each night when the lights go out
It can be found on the ground all around
Oh, what a ratly feast!

Goose: "Why, a fair has enough disgusting leftover food to satisfy a whole army of rats!"

Templeton: "Is this true? Is this appetizing yarn of yours true?? Will I find..."

Melon rinds and bits of hotdogs
Cookie crumbs and rotten cotton candy
Melted ice cream, mustard dripplings
Moldy goodies everywhere!

Goose: "Yes, yes!"

Lots of popcorn, apple cores
Bananna peels and soggy sandwiches
And gobs of gorgeous gook to gobble at the fair!

Goose: "Yes, yes, yes!"

Templeton: "I like high living... what you say tempts me!"

Goose: "It's true. Go to the fair, Templeton. You will find that it will surpass your wildest dreams!"

Templeton: "You mean tin cans with particles of tunafish stickin' to 'em? Greasy paper bags stuffed with rotten eggs?"

Goose: "Yep, yep, yep. True, true, true!"

Templeton: "That's enough, don't tell me anymore! I'm going!"

A fair is a veritable smorgasbord orgasbord orgasbord
After the gates are shut
Each night when the lights go out
It can be found on the ground all around
That's where a rat can glut, glut, glut, glut!
